The Capitol Building can be seen in the lower left-hand of the design, and the rising sun on Liberty's back while her garments and hair blow with the gale. Mintage of the US Eagles began in 2021 with a classic design on the reverse of the coin: a bald eagle carrying a branch on its talon, as it joins its mate and eaglet on their nest. The design, created by Miley Busiek Frost, is to be used until mid-year of 2021, when a new design is scheduled for release.

America's mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are engraved on the sides of the illustration and the country's name on top. Below the eagle family is the gold content and face value of the coin, 1/4 OZ. Wildlife artist and member of the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program, Jennie Norris, fashioned the new reverse design for the American Gold Eagles. It displays a well-detailed eagle's head, earnestly gazing at the horizon.

The artist revealed that she wanted to incorporate the "pride and wisdom passed down through generations of time". Both mottos were repositioned above the eagle's head. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is still written on the top, but the order in which the gold content and face value are written on the bottom of the outer rim have been inverted.
